A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly intentional gas explosion at a country home in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews approached the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an eviction order for a brother and sister trio in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were taken into custody at the location and a third person who escaped following the blast was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been taken to the hospital.

The detonation could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene displayed the structure left as a heap of debris.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” commented the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the previous occasions.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the three owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the police arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the residents caused the explosion.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Claudio Papagno stated to the media.

“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the site, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a derelict state and had no electricity.

The official was convinced the explosion had happened on a floor above the access point and informed journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the explosion, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being activated”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants told reporters, mentioning that the family members had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister united with other elected representatives in honoring the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
